FAQ — The Chariot

Major Arcana

The Chariot

A prince advances beneath his canopy, drawn by two horses that are opposites in every way — one black, the other white. The Chariot is victory in motion: holding opposing forces together and making them move in the same direction.

Symbolic reading

The image is divided into two superimposed worlds: above, the prince beneath his canopy — the world of intentions, of causes; below, the horses — the world where things happen. And exactly on the line separating the two, the great Book, closed: neither in the prince's hands nor beneath the hooves, but at the point of junction — knowledge travels with the team, a portable sanctuary at the centre of the manoeuvre. The two horses, black and white, answer one another like two halves of the same breath: polarity is not fought, it is harnessed. In the distance, the silhouette of a city of domes and towers stands against the horizon, motionless: the destination does not move — the traveller does.

Reversed reading

The team comes apart: each force pulls its own way, victory is proclaimed before it is won, control masks a lost direction. The city disappears from the horizon — one is still moving, but towards where?
