The Lover
The Lover is not Love: he is the one who loves — the one for whom an attachment, a cause or a vocation now weighs upon every decision. Seated between two voices that advise without ever bearing the weight of the choice, he embodies a simple truth: one always decides alone.
Symbolic reading
The protagonist is seated — a break with the traditions, which show him standing. This seated posture is not paralysing indecision: it is the pause of someone who stops to consult before acting. The two female figures framing him keep their identity open — reason and desire, mother and lover, or any other polarity the reading may call forth. Above the scene, a winged figure holds the great Book open, from which a rain of cards pours out: for the first time in the series, the Book is actively consulted — and what it gives are cards. In the background, a volcano sends up its plume: raw drive, contained or released — the complete opposite of the figure's calm, deliberate posture. Two registers of the same energy: what one undergoes, what one chooses.
Reversed reading
The pause becomes postponement: consulting endlessly in order not to decide, letting the voices decide in one's place, or confusing the surge of desire with commitment. The choice remains suspended — and not choosing is already a choice, the worst one: the choice one did not make.
