Major Arcana
Justice
A winged goddess lowers her eyes towards her scales. Set into her necklace, an eye rests at heart level. Behind her, an open Book gives off the only light in the scene — neither a stone stele nor readable legal text: light itself carries authority.
Symbolic reading
Justice accuses no one. She does not look the querent in the face — her eyes rest on her scales, and it is those scales, never perfectly level, that speak for her. This card invites lucid appraisal rather than external judgement: no one in the image is being judged. In looking at her, you are looking at yourself. The eye set into her necklace has a dual function, depending on what you bring to it. If you come seeking to understand a situation, it reveals — shedding light on what you had not yet seen. If you come wounded, seeking redress, it protects — covering you with a gaze that wishes you no harm. Justice's faint smile is neither indulgence nor severity: it is the serenity of one who knows that rigour belongs to the law, never to personal intention. Equity, a fair decision, cause and consequence accepted. A moment of truth that cannot be evaded — a contract, a separation, a clarification — approached calmly rather than fearfully. The card often announces that a situation left unresolved will finally find its point of balance, however imperfect. There is no justice without law — and here, the law need not be written to carry authority: it radiates by itself. The mechanism is simple: an eye that perceives, scales that measure, a sword that reminds us that some things, once seen, can no longer be ignored.
Reversed reading
Reversed, it points to an unacknowledged imbalance, a postponed decision, or a misunderstanding about what is owed to whom. It may also indicate judgement that is too harsh towards oneself, or conversely a refusal to see one's own share of responsibility.
