Major Arcana
The Moon
At twilight, as day tips into night, nothing can be made out with certainty any longer. A slender crescent moon, the only light available, guides a passage between two towers towards a closed Book waiting to be reached. Along the way, discreet nourishment falls from the sky and sustains those who move forward through doubt. A card of fragile intuition, necessary confusion, and trust placed in a light that never fully reassures.
Symbolic reading
The Tarot de Marseille and the Rider-Waite-Smith agree on the essentials of this scene: two towers on either side of a path, a dog and a wolf howling towards the celestial body, and a crayfish emerging from the water. The DAL chooses to embody literally the French expression “entre chien et loup”: that precise moment of twilight when the eye can no longer distinguish the domestic from the wild. Here the Moon is neither full nor absent, but reduced to its first crescent, with no face at all — a fragile light, barely reborn, just enough to guide without ever fully reassuring. Behind it, the complete disc remains faintly visible, like a memory of what it will soon become. What some traditions read as tears or blood falling from the sky becomes here discreet nourishment, received by the dog and the wolf as it reaches them. And where the Rider-Waite-Smith places a mountain at the end of the path, the DAL places a Book — upright, closed, like a door waiting to be opened.
Reversed reading
Reversed, the crescent’s light is no longer enough to guide: confusion ceases to be a stage and becomes a lasting state. The dog and the wolf, rather than receiving the nourishment that falls, may seem to quarrel over it or ignore it. The path between the towers is no longer taken; the Book remains closed for good, not out of patience but out of renunciation. The card then invites you to ask whether you are refusing to move forward out of legitimate caution, or out of fear of what the night might reveal.
