Major Arcana

The Star

A woman gives the water of life without counting the cost, two vessels always full despite all they pour out. After the ordeal that has just ended, she reminds us that a gift can follow a catastrophe — that what has been destroyed can make room for what is about to be reborn. A card of hope, restored trust and generosity that never runs dry.

Symbolic reading

The Star belongs to Aquarius, the sign of one who gives without restraint. The Tarot de Marseille and the Rider-Waite-Smith agree on the essentials: a nude figure kneeling between sky and earth, pouring from two vessels at once — one into the water, the other onto the ground. The DAL expands this figure to the scale of the world itself: more than a woman beside a stream, a presence vast enough to shape an ocean with one gesture and a river with the other. What she pours is never named on the card — only two flows, one feeding the water, the other feeding the earth, as though life itself needed both at once in order to take form. A magpie, a silent guardian already encountered elsewhere in the deck, perches at the very centre of the open Grimoire at her feet: knowledge remains there, offered freely, with no one needing to carry it.

Reversed reading

Reversed, the same scene closes in. Trust withdraws, the gift seems to dry up, the source appears to recede rather than flow towards us. This is not a punishment: it is a time when we doubt that we are still worthy of receiving, when hope must be rekindled rather than received ready-made. Reconnecting with what continues to flow, even when unseen, remains possible.
