The Arcana / Ten of Cups

FAQ — Ten of Cups

Minor — Cups

Ten of Cups

Around a circular basin, four figures; at the centre, the Book — handed over, this time, in its entirety. Ten cups on two trays, five and five. And for the first time in the entire suit, a ray of golden light crosses the scene. The Ten of Cups is the completion of the handover: the inheritance has become shared.

Symbolic reading

What began at the Six is completed here: the elder no longer gives a cup, she hands over the Book in its entirety — the novice has travelled her path, from the illusions of the cave to the fulfilment of the water, and she is now worthy to take her place in the lineage. The four figures can be read as a family — grandmother, mother, father, daughter — or as an initiatory circle: both readings are true, because every family transmits and every transmission makes family. The ten cups on two equal trays speak of sharing without remainder. And the golden light, oblique, the first solar breakthrough in the mists of the whole suit: this is no longer the inner satisfaction of the Nine, but a blessing that can now be shared. Water has finished revealing; it radiates.

Reversed reading

The inheritance disperses or becomes a burden: incomplete transmission, a family that is only a façade, a gift that binds instead of freeing — or the golden ray one fails to see by staring at the ground.
