The Arcana / Five of Cups

FAQ — Five of Cups

Minor — Cups

Five of Cups

Beneath a dark cloak, the heroine mourns what has spilled: three cups lying on their sides, carried away on leaves by the current. Behind her, on the stable bank, two cups remain upright — and the Book. The Five of Cups is grief: real, necessary, and not final.

Symbolic reading

The dark cloak is protection, not a shroud: the grieving heart wraps itself in order to make the crossing. The DAL gives loss a precise geography: what has spilled is still in the current — it moves away, and that is what losing means; what remains is on the stable bank, near the Book — resources do not leave with what is leaving. A bridge, a house in the distance: the passage exists, it has not yet been taken, and the card presses no one — grief has its own calendar. But love does not disappear: it changes form, and that metamorphosis begins with tears.

Reversed reading

Grief freezes or is refused: the gaze fixed on the current, one's back turned for ever on the upright cups — or the crossing of the bridge, at last, towards the house.
