FAQ — Temperance

Major Arcana

Temperance

After the ordeal of the Nameless One, Temperance brings the first breath of calm. An angel pours a golden essence from one vessel to another without ever losing a drop — nothing stops, everything circulates, everything finds its balance again. It is the card of restored patience, of healing after stripping away, of harmony built gently rather than by force.

Symbolic reading

The winged figure of Temperance unites within herself two principles that the preceding Arcana still held in opposition — embodied here even in the division of her own body and clothing, half white, half red. The act of pouring is not an act of loss but of transmission: what flows between the two vessels is never depleted. In the DAL, the Grimoire itself takes part in this transformation: after being carried, closed and almost effaced in the previous Arcana, it rises here into the sky and becomes the light that illuminates the entire scene — knowledge ceases to belong to a single bearer and becomes a common good, offered to anyone who takes the path.

Reversed reading

Imbalance returns — excess, impatience, haste. The energy that flowed freely becomes blocked or is wasted; a healing process that still needs time is forced, or things are mixed that should have remained distinct. It may also signal a genuine need to slow down that has been ignored for too long.
