Major Arcana

Death

Traditional tarot often hesitates to name this card — many prefer to leave it untitled. The DAL makes another choice: it names it. Not as a provocation, but because what it shows needs no euphemism to be understood.

Symbolic reading

A spectral figure floats above a field of clay, faceless, scything before it with mechanical regularity, indifferent to whoever stands in its path. In its left hand, it clutches an old Book whose cover bears an engraved white rose — the only thing in the entire composition not destined to disappear. Around it, sinking into the clay, are a crown, a mitre, a wooden rattle, but also a wand, a cup, a gold coin and a broken sword: the whole world, great or humble, known or invented, belongs to the same ground.

Reversed reading

Reversed, Death exposes the refusal to let die what must die: clinging to a situation, a relationship or an identity that no longer has any reason to exist, thereby delaying the renewal that can come only after an ending. It can also point to fear that paralyses us in the face of inevitable change, or to a sudden, poorly prepared ending, with no time to grieve.
