King of Wands

A carved wooden throne — lion, salamanders, vines and grapes; a green spiral-patterned hat crowned with gold; a frontal gaze, the most sovereign in the suit. And at his feet, the open Book, offered yet guarded by a great living salamander. The King of Wands is the sovereignty of Fire: “I am what I know.”

Symbolic reading

His throne answers the Queen's: living vegetation gives way to carved wood — nature no longer growing, but worked and made into an artefact. His green spiral-patterned hat, topped with a crown, is a transformed echo of the Page's red hat worn askew: the same family of object, status reversed — carefreeness has become sovereignty. The Book lies on the ground, open, offered to whoever approaches; but a great living salamander guards it — knowledge is given, it is not plundered. The small creature ignored in the grass by the Page has grown with its master: conscious, watchful. The King's frontal gaze closes the suit: he has nothing left to conquer, he is what he knows.

Reversed reading

Sovereignty hardens: authority that crushes, fire domesticated into pride — or the offering withdrawn, the salamander turned into a Cerberus.
