The Fool

On a cliff overlooking the sea, a young man pauses, looking back towards the path he has already travelled. A joyful dog rises beside him. He holds an open Book whose cover bears an engraved white rose. The Fool reads aloud what he finds there, releasing the incantations it contains so that they can act. Five medallions adorn his belt; a staff and a satchel rest on his shoulder. Behind him, a sun shines in a starry night sky. This card announces a new beginning, but one that does not begin from nothing: it begins with everything that has already been lived.

Symbolic reading

The Fool is no beginner. He has been through everything — and that is precisely what now allows him to begin again differently. Where The Wanderer is still seeking his path, The Fool shows the way: not through authority, but because he has travelled it to the end. The rose he carries is no longer a mystery to unravel: the Book it seals is now open, and what it contains becomes teaching received, integrated, and passed on aloud. The five medallions remind us that nothing from this journey has been lost: every stage he has crossed remains with him, as living memory rather than a burden. The sun shining behind him, even in the middle of the night, says only one thing: he already knows the way back, and he remembers.

Reversed reading

Reversed, this card speaks of beginning again too hastily, without the wisdom that should accompany it — believing one is starting from zero when everything has already been learned, and forgetting what experience has cost. A self-confidence that rings hollow, or difficulty passing on what one knows to those who come after.
