The Arcana / Knight of Pentacles

FAQ — Knight of Pentacles

Minor — Pentacles

Knight of Pentacles

In chain mail beneath an emerald-green cloak, her red braid down her back, a female rider advances — her dapple-grey draught horse walking with a steady step. One hand holds the reins, the other contemplates a golden pentacle; at the saddle, a wooden mace, and the gilded edge of the Book visible in her saddlebag. The Knight of Pentacles is reliability in motion: the guardian making her rounds.

Symbolic reading

Tradition has made this Knight the most motionless in tarot — mount at a standstill, contemplation frozen; the DAL sets her moving: reliability is not immobility, it is regularity — the step of the draught horse, which never bolts and never gives up. The wooden mace at the saddle states her function: not a lance of conquest, but a tool of defence — she does not set out to take, she watches over what already is. The pentacle contemplated on the move: even while making her rounds, she reflects on what she protects. And the Book travels in the saddlebag, its gilded edge visible: knowledge is tested in the field — Earth has no theory that is not verified in the fields.

Reversed reading

Regularity breaks down: routine without attention, caution turned inertia, rounds that go round in circles — or the steady pace recovered, patient, that always arrives in the end.
