FAQ — Six of Swords

What does the Six of Swords mean in a reading?

The crossing: a conscious passage from one territory to another, carried by help that one cannot refuse and still make the crossing alone.

What is the central tension of this card?

Between what one leaves and what is not yet known: the cart moves along the road, and one does not emerge from a crossing unscathed — one emerges somewhere else.

What does the faceless ferryman driving the cart mean?

He is every ferryman, past and present — those who help us cross boundaries we cannot cross alone.

Why is it specified that the Book is held 'in full awareness' for the first time?

Because it was picked up again after the fall of the Five: it is no longer either burden or refuse, but truly possessed for the first time since the anger.

What has changed since the Five?

The rupture caused by anger finds its repair here: the young man takes up the Book he had thrown away and begins a conscious crossing towards another territory.

Does the Book open during the crossing?

No — in accordance with the invariant rule, it remains closed, but is now held in full awareness; its opening remains reserved for the Queen.

What does the reversed Six of Swords mean?

The crossing is refused or bogs down: one remains in familiar territory, pays the fare but never gets aboard — or believes one is moving forward while only the wheels spin in place.
