King of Cups

His throne is a piece of cliff, and the sea around him remains turbulent. His cup is open, his sceptre bears a luminous sphere, dolphins surround his seat — and the Book, open, rests beside him, no longer consulted. The King of Cups is serenity in the midst of the storm: he no longer learns the heart, he is it.

Symbolic reading

Everything about him answers the Queen: her closed cup is answered by an open cup — he no longer guards the mystery, he shares what he has integrated; the Queen's trident of the depths is answered by the luminous sphere — she governs the abyss, he governs the whole realm. The fish running through the suit become dolphins around the throne: emotion raised to intelligence, depth become mediation. The open Book placed beside him, no longer consulted, marks the final degree: he no longer reads it, he embodies it. The turbulent sea is essential — without the storm around him, his serenity would be merely scenery: it is because everything moves that his stillness is a victory. And in him, the masculine part glimpsed in the reflection of the Two has found its realised form: the masculine of the heart, fully integrated.

Reversed reading

Serenity hardens into coldness: emotion denied beneath control, calculated generosity — or the storm finally entering the throne, and the king becoming human again.
