FAQ — Four of Pentacles

What does the Four of Pentacles mean in a reading?

Possession that possesses: what we grip too tightly ends up holding us.

What does the picture within the picture represent?

The heroine poses richly dressed for a portrait painter, but on the canvas her double wears golden handcuffs — art reveals a truth she does not see for herself.

Why are the handcuffs gold rather than iron?

Because the prison is beautiful, comfortable, even deserved — precisely what makes it so difficult to leave.

What does the key placed at the feet of the painted double represent?

There is no inevitability: the way out is painted into the same canvas as the confinement.

Where are the four pentacles on the card, and what do they map?

Over the heart, at the belt, and even on the childhood tablet reappearing on the ground — they map the geography of attachment, all the way to the original promise turned into a burden.

What does the reversed Four of Pentacles mean?

The hand opens or closes again: liberating expenditure, sharing restored, the key finally picked up — or miserliness spreading even to feelings.

Is material success the problem identified by this card?

No: success itself is not the problem; clinging to it is.

Is the Book present in this scene, and where is the fourth pentacle?

The Book is indeed present: it stands closed in the background, against the wall, beneath the open window. On its cover can be seen the fourth golden pentacle, which completes the three pentacles carried by the figure and completes the card's number four. It is relegated to the background because it has been set aside in favour of the vanity of success. The key painted on the easel signifies that it is thanks to the Book that the person will be able to remove the handcuffs; the handcuffs symbolize the grip of pride upon the person.
