FAQ — The World
What does The World mean in a one-card reading?
Short answer (validated yes/no table): YES, everything will be wonderful. The World closes the tarot’s first great cycle — it is the card of completion: what has been learned throughout the journey finally finds its place, whole.
Does The World announce success?
Yes, but success of a particular kind: not a momentary achievement, but the culmination of an entire journey carried through to its end.
Does The World represent an ending or a new beginning?
Both at once. The mandorla framing the figure evokes a passage, a birth: this world ending becomes another world beginning.
Why does the central figure hold a closed Book?
The Tarot de Marseille leaves in the figure’s hand an object never formally identified by tradition (a flask, or an egg). The DAL resolves this ambiguity as a closed Book, held against the body — and thus closes the loop opened by The Juggler, who already carried that same closed Book at the very beginning of the path.
What is the significance of the mandorla in The World?
A braided cord and a green laurel branch, echoing a figure in majesty from Romanesque art (Saint-Sernin in Toulouse) already used from The Juggler onwards. The mandorla evokes a passage, a birth: what ends here becomes another beginning.
What do the four winged creatures represent?
An angel, an eagle, a lion and a bull — the canonical Tetramorph, already encountered in The Wheel of Fortune. Each holds the medallion of one of the four Minor Arcana suits: the angel the sword, the eagle the cup, the lion the wand, the bull the pentacle. They no longer read anything actively here: at rest, they hold what has been integrated.
Is The World a positive card?
Yes, without reservation: it is one of the most favourable cards in the deck, the card of completion and recognition of a journey carried through to its end.
What does The World mean reversed?
Reversed, The World speaks of a cycle dragging on without reaching its conclusion — a final step not taken, a recognition delayed. Nothing is lost: what is almost complete remains so, suspended rather than failed.
How does the DAL World differ from the Tarot de Marseille?
The Tarot de Marseille shows a single wand and an object that has remained ambiguous in tradition. The Rider-Waite-Smith, meanwhile, gives the figure two wands. The DAL chooses the single wand — a conscious echo of The Juggler — and resolves the ambiguous TdM object as a closed Book. Another deliberate difference: the figure stands on no ground; she floats above a cosmic vortex, whereas the TdM and the RWS show her standing.
How does The World prepare the card of The Fool?
The World closes the deck’s first octave (Tarot de Marseille register, from The Wanderer to The World). The Fool (22), immediately after it, opens the second octave in the Rider-Waite-Smith register — The World is the final card of the traditional cycle before the two Major Arcana unique to the DAL.
